Pregnancy brings significant physical change: weight gain and postural shifts that strain the spine and pelvis, which is where the discomfort and the reduced mobility come from. Chiropractic care matters here because it provides safe, non-invasive adjustment to maintain spinal alignment, relieve pressure on nerves, and support the body as it adapts, without medication that may carry risk for the mother or the baby.
Addressing the musculoskeletal imbalance helps you manage the physical demands of pregnancy, from supporting a growing belly to preparing for labor. Regular adjustment optimizes pelvic alignment, which can ease delivery and reduce complications, and keeps you active and comfortable through the pregnancy.
Increased weight and a changed spinal curve cause lower back discomfort. Adjustment realigns the spine to reduce pain and improve mobility.
Hormonal change and pelvic expansion lead to misalignment and discomfort. Gentle technique restores the balance and takes the pressure off.
Pressure on the sciatic nerve from the growing uterus causes leg pain or numbness. Care relieves the nerve compression.
Postural change from breast weight and forward tilt strains the upper body. Adjustment eases the tension and restores range of motion.
Rapid uterine growth causes sharp pelvic or abdominal pain. Chiropractic methods reduce the strain on the ligaments and support pelvic stability.
Reduced back and pelvic pain. Improved pelvic alignment to support an easier labor. Better mobility for ordinary daily activity. Less sciatic nerve irritation. Better posture and less strain. More relaxation and less stress through gentle adjustment. And a potential reduction in labor time and complications, through optimal pelvic positioning.
Research shows that regular chiropractic adjustment before birth reduces pregnancy complications and helps the fetus position correctly for delivery.
Natural childbirth often separates the pubic symphysis. Sometimes that joint does not reform in proper alignment.
The symptoms are chronic idiopathic low back pain, pelvic pain, pelvic inflammation, pain while walking, inguinal pain, incontinence, or another pelvic joint such as a hip or a sacroiliac joint that now chronically settles into the wrong position even after it is adjusted.
Untreated pubic symphysis dysfunction can last for years, even decades, undiagnosed, and it often ends in a disability rating. A chiropractor who is looking for it can correct it quickly and without fuss.
Every postpartum mother should be examined by a chiropractor soon after childbirth. The experience is traumatic for your body as well as the infant's.
Pregnancy changes what a physical examination needs to look for, so it starts the same way every examination here starts.
A comprehensive chiropractic examination begins with a detailed health history, to gather information on past conditions, symptoms and lifestyle factors. Then vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, height and weight. Orthopedic and neurological examinations test range of motion, reflexes and strength, and isolate the pain generator. The physical examination includes static and motion palpation to identify restricted joints, spinal thermography to detect the temperature variations that indicate inflammation, and posture screening to evaluate full body spinal alignment. We may order imaging such as X-rays or MRI, or laboratory studies, for a more precise diagnosis, along with any condition-specific tests such as auscultation.
This process is how we identify neuromusculoskeletal problems without unnecessary intervention.
"Is this safe for the baby?" The techniques used in pregnancy, including the Webster Technique, are specifically designed for pregnant patients, and they are gentle.
"Could an adjustment start labor early?" The methods support your body's natural process. They are not intended to and do not trigger premature contractions.
